Chickees

For those of you that know me really well, my very first memory, ever, that I can freely conjure, is of the San Diego Zoo. I was only about five and I can’t remember any of the zoo or of the day, or even of San Diego, but I remember the baby chickens. There was an incubation table with all the new hatchlings, and you could hold them. I remember holding one, and how small he was.

Today, for the second time in my life, I held a baby chick. He is one month old, and he is part of the new litter that my Ukrainian grandma bought at the market to raise for this year. I was surprised at how large he seemed. I would have thought my memory from that age would have made him seem much bigger then, but I was also struck by how long ago that was. 20 years. I have 20 years of memories on which I am building. It is hard to fathom. There are so many. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have 40 or 60, or 80 years of memories!
