The First Step
Well, I have embarked on the first step of the adventure. After spending 10 days in the keys helping to train the staff for SeaBase's spring season, I headed up to Chicago to meet up with all the other new volunteers to Ukraine.I arrived in Chicago on Tuesday and spent two wonderful days with Lauren Rottholtz, a friend from FSU. She and her roommate, Melissa, showed me great hospitality. We visited the Art Institute, the Planetarium, Millenium Park, and bummed around downtown.
We also had some great ethnic food to satisfy my cravings before I leave - Lebanese (with Matthew Barrowclough from FSU Sailing), Mexican, and a good old-fashioned diner (not to mention Quiznos). Then yesterday, my Uncle Tom picked me up and we went out to Woodridge to have a really nice pizza dinner with his family, my Uncle Rob's family, and Uncle Ken and Aunt Erma. I had a great time visiting with everyone and playing with all my cousins.
Today we are off to a pancake breakfast to raise money for my cousin Jonathan's school band, and then I head back downtown to start two days of staging (read "paperwork and ice-breakers") before leaving for overseas on Monday. I am not nervous yet, but I feel like I should be.
